KoE Blog: Villager vs Guide
Villager vs Guide Blog
Minecraft vs Terraria
“An Investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”
-Benjamin Franklin
Intro
Since both of their creations, Minecraft and Terraria have been compared. Two of the biggest icons in sandbox survival gaming to ever grace PC and console screens. Many have wondered which one of their main adventurous silent protagonists would win if they ever met and fought one another. A debate as old as the games themselves. Since it's been so much we’ve decided to look at this comparison under a… slightly different lens. Instead of Minecraft’s Steve and Terraria’s Terrarian duking it out with their tools and weapons we have decided to take a deeper dive into this iconic rivalry by looking into both’s game’s friendly NPC’s.
Villager, The tycoon trading Squidward doppelganger from Minecraft. Robbing you of your hardly earned emeralds since 2011!
“HmmmRMM”
Guide, The mysterious yet helpful mentor from Terraria. The first of the Terrarians' never ending list of NPC friends!
“They say there is a person who will tell you how to survive in this land… oh wait, that's me”
Ok, since this fight is a little abnormal to say the very least. It's important to cover a couple ground rules before we get into this. This fight will be a one on one fight, both will be taken at the absolute peak of their potential abilities. Villager will have access to all different types of jobs and max level trades through the use of job blocks and Guide will use a comp of both the main game and the graphic novel. These both should be theoretically possible anyways, seeing as the Villager can change their profession on a whim giving them access to more of their possible arsenal and the “Order of the Guide” proves that all the Guides are connected and could theoretically have access and perform similar feats as one another. We will not be using Dungeons or Legends for the Villager.
I’m Lucky the Pending (changing this from the future), the host that did the last one. Also I had to change my colour, aw man.
And I’m Mr. Tree, the better host that slapped his name on the last one 😎(I actually worked on this one I swear)
Disclaimer: This is mainly for fun, so things may be wrong, but you know it's about the journey not the destination. (also probably spelling mistakes but like) also Spoilers.
Background
History of Minecraft's first Human NPC!
A long time ago, the overworld would become under attack by beings from the Nether, the Piglins filled with greed looked to take over the overworld and their inhabitants. The villagers were no match for such a threat, as they were mostly a peaceful civilization that lived in harmony with the world around them. But a legend would rise from the ashes of the burning world and stop the invasion with the help of the god-like beings dubbed “The Host” and the mythical creatures called “The Allays”. Though they stopped the invasion, they hardly brought peace to this world. The war taught the overworld mobs how to fight and they now had a thirst for it, the villagers were not safe from this effect either with many disbanding and forming a group called the “The Illagers” that would raid and destroy villages across the world. The villagers needed to be protected, and though they had the equipment they lacked the skills to fight, so they created large Iron Golems to ward off and protect their homes.
It’s been hundreds of years since the original invasion of the overworld, but the Villagers still remain as one of the only human NPC’s within the world of Minecraft. They still try to live peaceful lives within their towns. With all the new “Ancient Builders” they learned the art of trade and used this to expand their wealth and towns to greater heights. They formed a system of jobs to keep the towns running such as farming, clerics, shepherds, and more. But the world was no longer as kind and harmonic as it once was, Iron Golems patrols villages twenty four seven just to protect them from many of the possible threats that concern their safety. And when you load into your world and find a quaint little village, they welcome you with open arms (Metaphorically, usually their arms are closed) and your given the choice to live in peace with them like the builders of ancient times or to cause chaos and destruction to their town like the fallout caused by those same builders.
A Small Guide for Terraria’s Guide!
In the beginning, the gods would create countless amounts of planets, each planet being its own living being filled with its own life and creatures. The gods would ensure that each world would have a balance of every living creature, regardless of how it would be obtained. This would lead to the creation of the Crimson, Corruption, and the Hallow. Eons later, In the blind spot of the universe lies a planet with endless potential. This world being the world of the main protagonist, you, however a being of immeasurable power with no origin to speak of, Cthulhu, would arrive. Cthulhu wanted to cause destruction and rain over all life there, but an ancient race of Dryads soon started to fight against Cthulhu. The Dryads would greatly damage Cthulhu and make him flee to the dark side of the moon, but not without their own losses. All but one would lose their lives in this battle. That sole survivor would go into hiding for many years.
This leads to the current day where a society called “the Order of the Guide” had been formed. They would be responsible for passing down information for generations. A Guide may go by many names Andrew, Levi, Jake, but they all help you with one thing, helping you get accustomed to the world. However, the Guide is far more strange then he seems. The guide is somehow connected to the world itself and no one really knows of the origin of the Guide. You see the Guide is actually a being known as the Wall of Flesh. The Wall of Flesh is the Guardian of the world set in place to protect it. Once the guide is either killed in the underworld or the Guide Voodoo doll thrown in lava in the underworld, it will summon the Wall of flesh. Not only that but not to mention that the guide is the brother to the ninja, great-grandson to the Nymph, and the son of the moon lord !?!?!?!?? This is so wild. But at the end of the day the Guide is just doing his best to help you, the player, and give some helpful advice for your journey to defeat the Moon Lord. All ways there to help, unless you sacrifice him in order to get one step closer to fighting the moon lord.
Weapons and Equipment
Villager
Emeralds
There's nothing these big nosed townsfolk like more than this green colored jewel found deep within the caves of the overworld. Emeralds are mainly used for trading with the player character in return for items and stuff. Most of the Villagers transactions include emeralds, whether it be on the receiving or giving end for some kind of item in return.
Job Blocks
In the Villagers economy, there's many different jobs and careers that they can take on. They can easily transfer and begin new jobs by the use of these job blocks which will allow them to take a job of their (Usually the players) choice instantaneously. This gives them access to new skills and equipment depending on the job and any villager can take on any job at any point regardless of their current position. Here's a list of each block and what job they assign the villagers with.
Blast Furnace (Armorer)
Smoker (Butcher)
Cartography Table (Cartographer)
Brewing Stand (Cleric)
Composter (Farmer)
Barrel (Fisherman)
Fletching Table (Fletcher)
Cauldron (Leather Worker)
Lectern (Librarian)
Stonecutter (Mason)
Loom (Shepard)
Smithing Table (Toolsmith)
Grindstone (Weaponsmith)
Assortment of Blocks
Through their trades, the Villagers have a large assortment of different blocks at their disposal. These can obviously be placed down for usually decoration or defence, but some blocks in the game do have more specific uses. We’ll be listing them here.
Bell: Give it a ring, and it will tell all Villagers around to move to their houses and take cover
Glowstone: A bright block usually found in the Nether that’s very fragile but gives off a light
Campfire: Just as it sounds, allows the user to cook food on top of it
Bookshelf: Reading is for nerds
Lantern: A light source that can be placed on floors and ceilings
Glass: A fragile block that's transparent so you see across it (Like…glass…y’know)
Chiseled Stone Brick: A durable and cool looking block made from stone
Polished Andesite/Granite/Diorite: Durable but ugly blocks
Dripstone Block: Drippy
Terracotta: A purely decorative block that comes in many cool patterns. They all have glazed variants as well
Quartz Pillar: Pillar made out of Quartz, quite durable
Block of Quartz: Block made out of Quartz, quite durable
Wool: A block of sheep wool that can come in many different colors
Carpet: A block of carpet that can come in many different colors
Bed: Villagers sleep in these during night time, it also allows them to regenerate health
Paintings and Item Frames: Decorational “blocks”
Armor
You might be wondering “VILLAGERS HAVE ARMOR”, in which the answer is yes they do. Of Course this is through their trades but surprisingly you can actually get the Villagers to wear armor in the base game (Though it's invisible on them but the effects of enchantments on it and stuff still work).
Leather Armor
Chainmail Armor
Iron Armor
Enchanted Diamond Armor (Enchantment depends)
Swords
The minecraft villagers might not be known for their impeccable skills when it comes to using swords, but they are known for their incredible craftsmanship. They have both an Enchanted Iron and Enchanted Diamond sword (Enchantment depends) which they could theoretically use in a fight.
Axe’s
The Villagers have a couple axe’s which they could theoretically use to fight off foes. Though its most common purpose is its innate ability to chop down trees. They have a basic stone variation, but two superior versions made of iron and diamond which are both enchanted.
Pickaxes
No, there is no such thing as an “Emerald Pickaxe”, but they do have a stone pickaxe which is commonly used to mine through stone and ore. Like the other equipment they also have an enchanted Iron and Diamond one.
Shovels
The Villager can use these shovels to dig graves for all of his enemies. Like usual there's a stone one and then two Enchanted ones which are made of Iron and Diamond. You get the drill.
Hoe’s
As normal, there's a stone version they can use and a Diamond one (Not enchanted this time). It’s used for farming and stuff idk man i’m researching the Minecraft Villagers give me a break.
Shield
Another thing they can sell to you through trades, the Minecraft Villagers can own a shield which is commonly used to deflect melee and ranged attacks.
Bow
When paired with an arrow, a bow can be a dangerous tool to shoot mobs that are far away at a range for solid damage. Though it’s debatable how well they would actually be using it if they tried.
Crossbow
Basically just like the bow but it does act a tad differently as you can only shoot it once it’s fully pulled back but it packs more of a punch and range on average.
Arrow’s and Tipped Arrows
The ammunition for the bow and crossbow, normal arrows pack some solid damage but the tipped arrows have a special property to them that could be more or less useful depending on the arrow which I will list here.
Fire Resistance (Normal and Extended)
Harming (One and Two)
Healing (One and Two)
Invisibility (Normal and Extended)
Leaping (Normal One, Normal Two, Extended One)
Night Vision (Normal and Extended)
Poison (Normal One, Normal Two, Extended One)
Regeneration (Normal One, Normal Two, Extended One)
Slow Falling (Normal and Extended)
Slowness (Normal One, Normal Two, Extended One)
Strength (Normal One, Normal Two, Extended One)
Swiftness (Normal One, Normal Two, Extended One)
Turtle Master (Normal One, Normal Two, Extended One)
Water Breathing (Normal and Extended)
Weakness (Normal and Extended)
Food
Eating food helps the Villagers regenerate, luckily their farmers can produce a lot of different types of food which will be listed here.
Cooked Chicken
Cooked Porkchop
Cooked Cod
Cooked Salmon
Rabbit Stew
Bread
Pumpkin Pie
Apple
Cookie
Cake
Golden Carrot
Glistening Melon Slice
Enderpearl
The Enderpearl is a very helpful tool that causes the user who throws it to teleport to the location of where it lands. Yes Villagers can trade this, and yes the idea of a Villager teleporting like Slenderman is pretty funny.
Suspicious Stew
A mysterious source of food which can inflict the user with a negative or positive side effect which I will list here.
Night Vision
Jump Boost
Weakness
Poison
Blindness
Saturation
Miscellaneous Trading Items
There's many more items they could use from their trades but not all of them are completely that useful in a fight. So I'm gonna list the less useful ones in this section.
Enchanted Fishing Rod: A Fishing Rod which fishes for…fish. The enchantment makes it better than your average wooden rod
Bucket of Cod: Places down a large block of water which has a small little Cod friend inside
Leather Horse Armor: Armor for a horse that's made out of Leather
Saddle: A Saddle for a horse or pig
Enchanted Books: Can be used to enchant things but it needs a enchanting table
Clock: Obviously it tells the time
Compass: Helps the user navigate
Name Tag: Allows user to name things
Brick: Brick
Lapis Lazuli: A component very useful in enchanting
Bottle ‘o Enchanting: Gives users more levels which helps them enchant things
Redstone: Used in redstone contraptions and such
Banner and Banner patterns: Purely decorative things
Maps: Just how it sounds, helps navigation and such
Iron Golem
To protect themselves from the dangers of the overworld nights, the Villagers created a living metal beast known as “The Iron Golem”. It’s incredibly strong, even more so than the player, and is one of the strongest non boss creatures in the entire game. Their arms have very long range and they launch their foes into the air which causes them to take fall damage too. They can take a ton of punishment and can be healed through iron as well though they don’t naturally regenerate. They also really like rose’s.
As the Witch…
Potions
Upon turning into a witch, the Villagers gain access to many different types of drinkable and splashing potions which can be used on themselves or others to induce certain effects. They will be listed down below.
Splash Potion of Weakness
Splash Potion of Slowness
Splash Potion of Harming
Splash Potion of Poison
Potion of Water Breathing
Potion of Fire Resistance
Potion of Healing
Potion of Swiftness
As the Zombie Villager…
Randomly Generated Weapons and Armor
There's no set thing a Zombie Villager can have, but they can randomly have equipment or armor that just spawns on them. They can also pick up any equipment on the floor so they should be able to put on anything that they were using before like their Iron or Diamond Equipment.
Guide
Bow
The guide always comes equipped with a wooden bow to defend himself. Depending on the arrow, his bow can do a good amount of damage to mobs and its range helps him protect his and the other npc’s shelter. The wooden Bow does 4 damage and has 4% critical hit.
Arrows
The ammunition for the Guides bow, in which he has two different types of arrows that he can use. He also seems to have an infinite supply of these arrows so he’ll never run out.
Wooden arrows
Damage 5
Flaming arrows
Damage 7
Gives “On fire” debuff
Green Cap
If a guide has the name Andrew and is murdered. He will drop the Green cap. The Green cap gives 2 defense. It looks like Luigi's hat btw.
Table and chairs
Each Npc has a Table and Chair of some kind in their room. They can sit in the chairs and use the tables… awesome.
Light sources
Each room has a light source of some kind. Usually it is a touch of some kind, however it can be other things such as candles, lamps, campfires, chandeliers, and many other types. However, these hardly add anything other than a light source for the guide to see.
Swords
In the graphic novel the guide has accsense to swords. He is decently skilled with the swords, being able to keep up with Vale, the graphic novels equivalent to the Terrarian. Levi, his name in the novels, has shown to fight things like slimes and zombies, and other greater foes like the Eye of Cthulhu.
Money
💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰
Guide’s books
The Guide has multiple books that hold knowledge of the world of Terraria. Holding information about the blood moon, corruption, crimson, As well as a book that presumably only Guides can read.
Shine Potions
The Guide has shown to have Shine Potions. As the name implies, it makes the one who drinks it begin to glow. This makes it easier to see in the dark and explore caves. In game the Shine potion lasts for 10 minutes.
Rope
Guide has ropes. He can use this to climb and get to places normally out of reach. As well as to get out of places.
Copper Pickaxe
The guide has access to Pickaxes. In game it has a Pickaxe power of 35% and a damage of 4. Which means it can mine things weaker than Meteor.
Bug Net
The Bug net is an item that allows its user to collect critters. This allows him to capture things such as bunnies, birds, worms, frogs, goldfish, penguins, buggies, and many other types of critters.
Wood Armour
The Guide has been shown to wear wood armour. Each piece of wood armour gives about 1 defence, besides the boots. When wearing the full set, it gives a bonus of 1 defence.
Backpack
The guide has a backpack which can be used to store the rest of his equipment.
As the Wall of Flesh…
WoF attack stuff things
The hungry
Mouths attached by a long vein that try to eat the player by stretching and biting, the more damage done to the main body the more resilient and stronger The Hungry gets. At some point, when enough damage is done, they will detach and fly around at its foe.
Leeches
Wall of Flesh shoots out these “Leech’s'' that track down the foes and try to eat them alive. They can be killed but can also be spawned nearly infinitely.
Tendrils
Foes marked with the “Tongue” debuff will be snatched by the tendrils and attempted to drag into the mouth of the Hungry at 56mph.
Skills and Abilities
Villager
Trading
Villagers society is built on trading, and it seems as if they have been doing it for centuries from what we know of the official Minecraft Lore. Villagers are most known for this skill and they use it to mutually benefit themselves and the person they are trading with.
Communication
Villagers are always keeping eachother up to date on the latest breaking news. A lesser known feature within Minecraft is the Villager “Gossip” feature. This feature makes it so the Villagers will talk and discuss amongst themselves which will alter their trades depending on how the player has treated them.
Construction
Though we rarely see them actually doing much of anything, they have displayed the ability to construct whole villages and towns full of farming plots, houses, and churches out of a variety of different blocks.
Farming
One of the jobs a Villager can obtain is that of a Farmer which causes their whole job to be about… well farming! And they're pretty good at it, so good that players commonly steal all of the Villagers' crops while dashing through the town.
Blacksmithing
Villagers may be a peaceful collective but that has hardly stopped them from crafting some of the overworlds most dangerous weapons. Weaponsmith and Toolsmith have a record of creating Swords and Axes out of Iron and Diamonds to sell to eager customers on a daily.
Fishing
There's a fisherman job, fisherman fish, not terribly complicated.
Magic Knowledge
Villagers, after their decades of living in the overworld, have successfully been able to learn and cultivate magic in certain ways. The Librarian has access to many Enchanting Books, Villagers can trade bottles of pure experience points, and many of their tools come infused with enchantments that they trade to the player. Also they are able to bring blocks of metal to life with a pumpkin somehow.
Animal Herding (And a degree of Animal Companionship)
Villagers have cultivated many different types of livestock in their towns like cows and sheep which help feed and provide resources for them. They have also shown some degree of companionship with these animals, in the animated shorts there's Villagers with Pandas and Foxes, along with dancing along with other animals. Plus, cats usually patrol the villages keeping away Creepers.
Extreme Temperature Resistance
Villagers have been able to start civilizations in both the wretched deserts and unexplored tundras with seemingly little difficulty as they are able to cultivate all the same amenities as their less extreme counterparts and are unaffected by the temperature differences, even upon relocation.
Regeneration
After ten seconds of taking damage, a Villager will begin to regenerate their health back to full. Also in Minecraft, when a hunger bar is full you begin to slowly regenerate health so they could accomplish this with their food items.
Transformation
Any given Villager can transform into a hostile enemy during two specific events. If struck by lightning, a Villager will transform into a Witch and will gain the benefits of the Witch. If their health drops to zero upon getting attacked by a zombie, there's a chance they will turn into a Zombie Villager.
As the Witch…
Combat Experience
Witch’s are pretty formidable fighters upon encountering the player. Though they don’t fight traditionally, their skilled offensive potion attacks are lethal if a player isn’t prepared for such a fight.
Alchemy
Witches can make many types of potions, so obviously they have a skilled background in Alchemy. It also seems as if they can make nearly infinite of these lethal liquids to fling at a player's direction.
As the Zombie Villager…
Weapon Knowledge (Of some sort)
Upon picking up any kind of melee weapon, they seem to be able to effectively used it against the player and other Villagers to a pretty sufficient degree. It is possible that they aren’t more skilled than the average Villager, just more willing to use a weapon compared to a normal. Either way, they're not too shabby with swords and such.
Self Sustenance
Zombies don’t need food like an average Villager would, but this also means they can’t really regenerate (Unless there's rotten flesh around, which gives them a small bit of health upon eating)
Animal Companionship
Baby Zombie Villagers can ride on the back of Chickens and many other animals, and they work together to bring down their taller counterparts. Depending on the animal they are riding, they have access to different helpful attributes that allow them to be far more dangerous than the normal adult Zombie Villager.
Transformation
In a complicated process that involves a golden apple and a splash potion of weakness, a Zombie Villager transforms back into a normal one. A cured Villager offers better trades for their gratitude. While transforming back into a villager, the zombie villager will gain a strength boost.
Guide
Crafting Mastery
The Guide has knowledge on how to craft everything in the game. He knows the things you need, the amount of things, and what you need to craft it. The only things he doesn’t tell you are things relating to the shimmer. However it is most likely that he does know of shimmer and how it works. The Guide could theoretically craft any craftable thing, however he would have to get his hands on said things to craft. This is tricky to figure out what he could craft, but most likely late game things are out of the question. He has been shown to craft things like wood armour.
So possible very early game things would be the most feasible things for the Guide to craft. Though he knows how to craft everything in the game, it is a bit hard to quantify what he would actually be able to craft.
Extensive knowledge
The Guide has lots of knowledge of the world of Terraria. Things such as crafting recipes, blood moons, bosses, surviving tips, combate tips, how to make other NPCs move in and many many other things. This is also impart due to the “Order of the Guide” which has passed down knowledge for centuries.
Combat Experience
In both the game and graphic novel, primarily graphic novels, the Guide has been shown to have decent fighting capabilities. In the novels he is able to fight on par with Vale, the novel's Terrarian, who they team up with to fight the Eye of Cthulhu. Not to mention his marksmanship and Swordsmanship skills, rarely ever missing a shot with his wooden bow and being able to keep up with some pretty impressive sword fighter in the graphic novel.
Medicinal Skill
Was able to bandage Vale and himself up after being hurt during the graphic novel using a bandage.
Connected to the world
It's stated multiple times that the Guide is somehow linked directly to the world of Terraria, likely how he gets all of his information. Also helps that he is the son to Moon Lord, the final boss of the game.
Soul linked to Guide Voodoo Doll
The guide is directly tied with the Guide Voodoo Doll. This is the main way for the player to harm the Guide. Moreover, if it is dropped into Lava in the underworld, the Guide will combust into flames, dying instantly. This leads to the Wall of Flesh being summoned.
Passive Healing
Each town NPC is able to regenerate health over time at the same rate including the Guide.
Fall Damage Resistance
Each town NPC is immune to fall damage. Meaning they can fall from any height and not take any damage.
Slight Knockback immunity
The guide has a slight resistance to knockback.
Limited Luck Manipulation
Once the Guide is killed directly by the Player, it grants a small luck boost. Now this only applies if the Guide is killed. So the Guide himself can’t use it to boost his own luck.
Decrease Spawn rates
Each Town NPC is capable of lowering enemy spawn rates. This effect can increase with the more NPCs you have. This effect is lowered by being in the underworld.
Stat Amplification
With the “Advanced Combat Techniques” Volume 1 and 2, it gives all NPC’s a permanent buff in defence and attack.
Volume 1
+6 defence
+20% attack
Volume 2
+6 defence
+20% attack
This effect can stack with each other as well as boost from killing bosses
Transformation
Shimmered Guide
When the guide is in/hit with shimmer
Wall of Flesh
When Guide Voodoo Doll is dropped in lava in the underworld
When killed with lava in the underworld
Now the Shimmered Guide is purely cosmetic. Wall of Flesh is its own thing that I will now go over.
As the Wall of Flesh…
Laser Vision
The Wall of Flesh is capable of shooting lasers from its eyes.
Immunity to Fire and confusion effects
The Wall of Flesh is immune to these three debuffs.
Oh Fire!
On Fire! is a debuff which prevents regeneration and causes the afflicted NPC or player to lose 4 health per second.
Confused
Confused is a debuff which causes controls to reverse.
HeckFire
Heckfire is a Hardmode debuff that is a stronger version of On Fire!, preventing health regeneration and causing afflicted entities to lose 15 health per second. If affected by the Oiled debuff, afflicted entities will also take an additional 25 DPS, totaling 40 DPS.
Fear Manipulation
When within a certain range of the Wall of Flesh. He will inflict the “Horrified” debuff. Debuff in place within 900 tiles (1800 feet)
Battlefield Entrapment
When within the rage of the Wall of Flesh, he will inflict the “Tongue” debuff. if you are behind it, or try to go too far, it will drag you back using its tendrils. Debuff in place within 900 tiles (1800 feet). The “Horrified” debuff also makes it so when a player tries to teleport out of the battle it, they will die instantly. From combusting into flames.
Knockback Immunity Negation
The “Tongue” debuff still pulls players in regardless if they have equipment that makes them immune to knockback.
Paralysis
The “Tongue” debuff prevents players from moving entirely
Death manipulation
If the Wall of Flesh reaches the end of the underworld before being defeated, or the player teleports out, they will die instantly.
Summoning
The Wall of Flesh is capable of summoning Fire Imps that are stronger than normal ones during his boss fight. As well as “burping” Leeches.
Stat Amplification
The Wall of Flesh gains more speed, defense and stronger it becomes as its health goes down.
Knockback Immunity
The Wall of Flesh has complete immunity to any form of knockback.
Physical Feats
Villager
Strength
In one of the many books they were able to push and kick one of the protagonist down while under some sort of enraged cursed
Theoretically, they should be able to hold everything they trade all at once
Theoretically, the average Villager could be as strong as their zombie counterpart (There’s no statement saying the transformation makes them stronger) who can bust down doors and can do some damage to the player
The Iron Golem can easily fling mobs multiple blocks into the air
The Iron Golem is strong enough to attack through one block thick walls
The Iron Golem does 7.5 hearts of damage to any mob it hits, making it one of the strongest not boss mobs in the entire game right under The Warden
Durability
Same amount of health as The Player without armor, meaning they can take around similar levels of punishment
Can survive one swing of a Diamond Sword, and multiple swings of the other types of weaker swords
Have survived countless nights of zombie and pillager attacks, surviving getting shot by arrows, punched by zombies, and even being able to survive ravanger attacks
As a Witch they have slightly more health then the average villager, by three hearts exactly
The Iron Golem has five times the amount of health of the Player and can survive a ton of punishment
The Iron Golem is completely immune to both knockback and fall damage making knocking them down incredibly difficult
Speed
Villagers can outrun practically all mobs in the game for the most part, at least the ones that actively attack them as they are surprisingly one of the faster mobs in the entire game. Even Ravengers who're shown great charging speeds in the animations.
Can outmatch the players walking and running speeds pretty easily, though the Players sprinting speed is faster then their running speed
Can react very quickly to any hostile mob nearby, not even needing to see it to start bolting away from it
As a Baby Zombie Villager they have 30% more movement speed then the adult counterpart, making them incredibly fast mobs
As a Baby Zombie Villager they can ride certain mobs that could drastically increase their movement speed by even more
The Iron Golem is pretty slow, being made out of a bunch of metal and all
Guide
Strength
Has base damage of 8
Is comparable physically to all other NPC
Able to kill most common enemy found in surface biomes with relative ease
Such as Slimes, Demons eyes, Zombies, bats, Etc
Is able to easily kick open locked wooden doors in the novels with very little effort
Should be comparable to Vale and Helen in the novels.
Fought the Eye of Cthulhu, but were decently injured afterwards.
Advanced Combat Techniques volume 1 and 2 boost for his bow’s damage and his own defence. This would make him more durable and stronger.
+ 6 defence and +20% damage
For each boss defeated in terraria it gives a boost to the stats of all NPC’s. This is able to stack on with previously defeated bosses, except Moon Lord and King Slime. This should make his durability and bow strength better with each adding atop each other.
For most Pre hard mode bosses (Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu, Queen Bee, Skeletron)
all give +3 defence and +10 damage boost
Entering hardmode/ killing Wall of Flesh
+12 defence and +40% damage boost
For some of the hardmode bosses (Queen Slime, The Twins, The Destroyer, Skeletron Prime)
All give +6 defence and +15% damage boost
For remaining bosses (Plantera, Golem, Empress of Light, Lunatic Cultist)
All give +8 defence and +15% damage boost
As Wall of Flesh he does 50 damage on contact, along with being a being that literally holds the seal of light and darkness and takes up the entire length of the Underworld
Lasers do 22 and can increase to 30
The hungry do 30 damage and can increase to 75
Tendrils deal 50 damage per second
Leeches do 26 damage
As Wall of Flesh can harm and kill Pre-hard mode Terrarian
Durability
Has a base defence of 15 and a max health of 250 (The max being five times that of a Terrerian Zombie for perspective)
Is comparable physically to all other NPC
Should be able to survive hits from most common enemy found in surface biomes with relative ease
Such as Slimes, Demons eyes, Zombies, bats, ETC
Should be able to survive some hits from all Pre-hard mode Bosses and Wall of Flesh
King Slime, Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu, Queen Bee, Skeletron.
King Slime has been shown to hit with enough force 3.65 MJ. Each boss should be stronger than the last, so possible more durable
Should be comparable to Vale and Helen in the novels
The three were able to fight and defeat Eye of Cthulhu
As Wall of Flesh has max health of 8000 with 12 defence
The Hungry have a max health of 240. defence of 10 and can increase to 40
As Wall of Flesh can fight on par with pre-hard mode Terrarian
Speed
Each NPC should have a base speed of 15 MPH
Is comparable physically to all other NPC
Should be comparable to Vale and Helen in the novels
They were able to fight and defend against the Eye of Cthulhu.
Could keep up with the Eye of Cthulhu in a fight with the help of Vale and Helen
Eye of Cthulhu should be faster than the King Slime, who can get up to 16 mph
Is able to Shoot things flying in the air
Such as Bats, Flying Fishes, Bees, Harpies, Demon Eyes, ETC
As Wall of Flesh has base speed of 8 mph and can increase to 41 mph
As Wall of Flesh Can shoot lasers
As Wall of Flesh has tendrils that move up to 56 mph and can increase
Weaknesses
Villager
The Villagers have a handful of weaknesses, the biggest of which being that they come from a peaceful civilization and have never used their tools for violence in the past because of this. Usually they rely on their Iron Golems to protect their villages from threats, meaning overall they have a lack of overall combat experience and generally cowardice in nature (Though, In the books we did find times where Villagers or certain Villager people have used swords and bows when forced to. Meaning they CAN fight if they need to but aren't terribly skilled and prefer non violence).
Both of The Villagers transformations require some pretty convenient circumstances to happen. Like being struck by lightning or literally getting killed by a zombie. And Zombie Villagers have their own weakness by being pretty dumb (Literally lacking brains) and becoming slower then the normal counterpart probably do to all their flesh rotting.
Guide
Although the Guide does have knowledge of how to craft everything in the game. It is unclear what he would actually be able to craft in a battle. Lots of crafting recipes require many things that take time and effort to obtain. The only possible things he would be able to craft are stuff like wood, cobble, iron, copper, and gold. But these are still tricky for the Guide to get a hold of mid battle. Along with that he would need to get a hold of the right crafting station to make said items.
Due to the Guide being connected to the Guide Voodoo doll. If it gets destroyed the Guide will instantly die. This does allow him to transform into the Wall of Flesh, however this is very tricky for the Guide to actually transform into. It requires the Voodoo doll to be burned in the underworld or for the Guide to be killed by lava in the underworld. This would be only accessible in some specific situations. Not to mention if the voodoo doll is destroyed by other means, it will not summon the Wall of Flesh. The Wall of Flesh is also confined to one area, that being the underworld. So if he would transform into it, he still would be confined to one area.
Final Thoughts
This fight would surely be a pretty abnormal one, now that we covered everything they have it’s time we actually get into which one of these friendly NPCs would take out the other. This will be compiling all the things we just went through and seeing what advantages both had over one another. So will the emerald hoarding townsfolk outmatch the Guide, or will this Mysterious and cursed NPC take down the Big Nosed Villager for good!
Physical Stats
Physical Stats weren’t terribly complicated in this case. Starting with physical Strength, their feats would show that they are relatively even if not a little more in favour of the Guide. Both can break down doors, at least theoretically for the Villager. But the Guide can do it pretty easily while it takes a couple swings for the Zombie version of the Villager (To be fair, the door Guide kicked down was a bit more decrepit than the Villagers' more pristine doors). But factoring in the stat amps the Guide can receive for strength and it’s clear that he should take a pretty solid edge here, also that they have shown more of their strength off.
Similar story with durability, the Guide seems pretty consistently above the Villager in terms of taking punishment. Not even factoring in the stat amps they can receive which would give them an even bigger edge in this context.
Though it should be mentioned that though the Villagers aren’t as strong or as durable as the Guide. Their Iron Golem certainly is stronger and more durable then the Guide even after his stat boost. Putting in perspective, the Guides max health is around 2.5 times that of the player in Terraria while in completely base form (So just spawned in, no health crystals no armor) while the Iron Golem has five times the average amount for the Minecraft player. And of course, the Wall of Flesh dominates literally both of these stats with no real struggle because like… look at it.
Speed is the only real outlier in terms of this section, Guide does at least have a faster combat speed but the Villager’s movement speed and reaction speed surprisingly seem to outmatch that of the Guide. Even while fighting in the game, the Guide rarely moves terribly quick while the Villager can easily outpace the player’s base run speed and most mobs in the game. Plus being able to react to mobs from far distances without even needing to really see them. The Guide is faster then the Iron Golem however, and the Wall of Flesh is much faster then the Villager.
Skills and Abilities
Skills are a bit convoluted, they do have their own advantages in different aspects. But when looking specifically in terms of fighting, it's pretty clear that the Guides actual knowledge of fighting in terms of swordsmanship and marksmanship give him a pretty clear skill advantage. Plus he’s far more knowledgeable on most stuff, at least generally.
This includes Experience, though the Villagers have been around forever it doesn’t necessarily mean they have decades of actual fighting experience (Because they don’t). While the Guide has partaken in fights even if it’s usually on the side of the main player. They have fought many more foes and aren’t as cowardly as the Villagers.
The Guide has more general abilities then the Villager but most aren’t terribly helpful in this fight. It’s mostly small game mechanicy stuff that aren’t glaringly useful in a fight like this. Guide does have better regeneration excluding outside factors, but Villagers food options can keep up and possibly outmatch this. Villager transformations would give him the lead in this category… but so would the god of eternal nightmares (The Wall of Flesh).
Weapons and Equipment
The Guide does have some pretty useful weapons like his bow and fire arrows, but even though the Villager never really uses them, the weapons they do have at their disposal absolutely decimate the Guides arsenal. Both have bows and swords, but Guides arrows aren’t anything compared to the magical properties the Villagers arrows have. And Guides' sword might as well be a butter knife compared to an enchanted Diamond Sword that can have anything from sharpness or fire aspect. It’s basically very early game items versus very late game items which shows how much more powerful the Villagers arsenal is.
Plus, the Villagers have way more versatility with their arsenal. Giving them far more options for both offence and defence like a shield and enderpearl which literally gives them the ability to teleport around the Guide, or their blocks which they can use to defend themselves. Villagers just have much more actual equipment then the Guide does.
Armor is more of the same, Guide’s armor is pretty lackluster when compared to the Villagers. With the Villager having the second strongest armor in their game while the Guide is stuck with twigs wrapped around him. Plus its enchantments make it even more complicated for Guide, with things like thorns being able to redirect all of his damage back to himself.
The Villager can also eat to regenerate faster, give himself possible boost with his stew, or alter Guides' physical stats with the tipped arrows giving him pretty solid counters. And again, all of their enchantments for their gear can also give them some pretty big edges and counter many of the Guides equipment and advantages.
The Witch and Zombie Villager would add onto this equipment edge for Villager. But once again none of this really matters if Guide turns into the Wall of Flesh and rips Villager’s nose off with its far superior arsenal.
Transformations
Obviously, comparing a lonely Zombie Villager or Witch to an actual god isn’t really fair. The Wall of Flesh completely outclasses anything the Villager, Zombie Villager, the Witch, or even the base Guide can do…but obviously if it was this easy to decide we wouldn’t be going so long about this debate. The Wall of Flesh is gonna be practically impossible for the Guide to actually use in this fight. He’d need to somehow bring the Villager all the way to the core of their world (Or somehow the Nether which would be equally as hard) and then kill himself while the Villager is there. With his equipment this doesn’t seem terribly possible to accomplish, especially since the Villagers aren’t known for going too far out of their Village and being pretty cowardly (Cowardly people aren’t terribly willing to go into the DEMONS UNDERWORLD). And even if Guide made it down there, he would have to make sure the Villager did too because the Wall of Flesh is hard stuck to the Underworld and can’t attack anything on the overworld/surface. Villager’s transformations are also difficult and pretty much luck based, but even those lucked based transformations are far more accessible then the leaps in logic you would have to make for the Guide to actually use the Wall of Flesh.
Conclusion
Villager
Advantages:
+Transformations are far easier to access than Guides…
+Faster Movement/Reaction Speed
+FAR more versatility
+Iron Golems we’re far stronger and more durable then the Guide even at their max
+All equipment, including swords and armor, outclassed all of the Guides arsenal
+Swords, Armor, Tipped arrows, and Enchantments could strongly counter the Guides physical edge
+All of Villagers blocks, shields, and Ender pearls makes Villager very hard to actually hit for Guide
+Can regenerate health and match Guides regeneration through the use of Food items
+Through the Iron Golems and possibly even the animals around, The Villager could secure the number advantage
+Dr. Trayaurus would solo the Wall of Flesh
Disadvantages:
-…But still very hard to access in their own right
-Has little to almost no actual combat skill and experience
-Iron Golems take time for Villagers to rebuild after dying
-The Villager has no options if The Guide does actually turn into the Wall of Flesh
-Big forehead and even bigger noses
Guide
Advantages:
+A good deal Stronger and more Durable after stat amps…
+The Villager has no way of competing with the Wall of Flesh…
+Faster combat speed
+FAR superior fighting skills with melee and ranged weapons
+FAR more experience in combat situations
+More general knowledge
+Infinite Arrows
+Better self regeneration without the use of outside factors
+If he was Armsdealer, Villager would have never stood a chance
Disadvantages:
-…But even then, Villagers Swords and Armor surpassed the Guides stat advantage. Same with the Iron Golem.
-…But it’s practically impossible for Guide to actually pull this off in this fight
-Given the circumstances, Guide wouldn’t be able to really craft anything that can match the Villagers arsenal
-He is not Armsdealer
This matchup was certainly very strange and probably would never be able to actually work. But we were stubborn enough to make it work and the results truly surprised us. The Guide did seem like a crowd favorite to win the whole thing at first, with his actual combat experience and skills along with his stat edge and all. But the more we looked into it, the Villager actually seemed to have the better advantages. Their equipment and Iron Golems completely outclassed the Guides' physical stats even with the amps, and their versatility and sheer power advantage really put Guide in a bad situation (Not to mention their offensive and defensive counters). The Guides combat edge was solid but the sheer power of Villagers arsenal made them hard to take out and hard for the Guide to reasonably compete with on his own. He was basically fighting a foe multiple times stronger than him in terms of strength and durability in terms of the Iron Golem and at the same time fighting someone that has everything he has but a thousand times more powerful. With his one major win con being impossible to pull off, the Villager surprisingly had every advantage they needed to take home the gold (Or in this case the Emeralds)
The Winner is The Villager
Villager Votes: Mr. Tree, Leonis_Neon, Dr. Trayaurus
Guide Votes: Armsdealer
If you got this far, awesome. Thank you for reading or something. Thank you to Mr. Tree for actually helping out with most of the research. Yeah, but if it was Arms Dealer…
I feel bad for you if you read this full thing but thank you regardless, it was a very strange and weird one to do which made it really fun. Thanks to Leon for working on this with me and thanks to Dr. Trayaurus for all the Minecraft Mod Showcases.
