KoE Blog: Fireboy and Watergirl vs Popo and Nana
Fireboy and Watergirl vs Popo and Nana Blog
Fireboy & Watergirl vs Ice Climbers
“Side by Side we can reach our dreams, cause nothing’s impossible, when we’re a team!”
-Spongebob Squarepants, 2015
Intro
Games are known for their iconic duos; Mario and Luigi, Sonic and Tails, Crafting Table and Furnace, Ratchet and Clank, X and Zero, and many many more. Some games wouldn’t be the same without their partner, just like these two iconic duos…
Fireboy and Watergirl, the two elemental warriors from Fireboy and Watergirls released by Oslo Albet in 2009.
“Use A.W.D to move Watergirl… …Use ←↑→ to move Fireboy.”
Popo and Nana, the cozy climbing duo from Nintendo’s Ice Climbers released in 1985. (For most the blog, them as a duo will be referred to as “Ice Climbers”)
“This unique twosome fight together as a team”
Now there are a few things we do actually need to clarify for both, as this can get really weird on what we could use for both.
For Fireboy and Water Girl, we will use the 6 games in the franchise as well as official Ports. Now more interestingly, we will also be using things from the Coolmath Games Social Medias, as while they don’t own the games, only host them, they are a big part of the game and have posts on their Twitter featuring a number of characters that are on the Coolmath Games website.
Now for the Ice Climbers, we’ll use its two games in the franchise it has, those being Ice Climbers and Vs. Ice Climbers. Alongside this we’ll look into some of the small cameo appearances they have made in four other games (Three of which being WarioWare). We will also use Super Smash Bros but specifically not scaling them to the high ends of Smash Bros. feats and feats performed by other characters outside Smash Bros. Basically their move set and stuff from Subspace Emissary mostly.
Also for something a specific character does, it will have a corresponding colour.
Fireboy - Red
Watergirl - Cornflower Blue
(Popo and Nana have virtually 0 differences in equipment and abilities)
Anything that has a “☆” is from outside media not from their original games or franchise.

If it were me, I would have done Sharkboy and Lavagirl. This MU is still pretty rawesome on the other hand.
Coolmathgames isn’t actually about Math, and Nintendo isn’t about Nin, Ten, or Do ):
Coolmathgames is the current home of Poptropica for some reason (this has nothing to do with the blog)
Actually Cool math has a separate website for that, called Cool Math. that’s were all of their actually math related things are smh
Disclaimer: This is mainly for fun, so things may be wrong, but you know it's about the journey not the destination. (also probably spelling mistakes but like) also Spoilers.
Background
Exploring temples with Fireboy and Watergirl
In 2009, a man named Oslo Albet created a game called Fireboy and Watergirl in Forest Temple as he had always been fascinated by puzzle games. The games themselves really don’t have much story other than two characters named Fireboy and Watergirl and they go through temples filled with various puzzles. They also go around collecting diamonds and stay away from fire and water because, as the game puts it “Never mix fire & water!” But that’s pretty much it for the actual story.
As the name suggests Fireboy and Watergirl are fire and water respectively. Fireboy has fiery hair and Watergirl has a waterfall ponytail. Their exact relationship between each other isn’t exactly clear, as it’s not mentioned anywhere in the games. Cool Math Games labels them as either friends or romantic partners, but like… idk, that's really all we're going to get as Oslo. Despite its simple premise and characters, the game was a massive success, spawning 5 other games in the franchise. A Lot of their fame comes from Cool Math Games, they played a major part in many games, and even after Flash died, Cool Math was able to keep many iconic Flash games up and running, including the ever iconic Fireboy and Watergirl.
Popo and Nana Break the Ice!
Designed and published by Nintendo back in 1985, Ice Climber is a game where you play as…well an Ice Climber and…climb. Really not more complex than that. Breaking through ice, leaping from level to level, and whacking silly yeti’s and polar bears that try and get in your way. This game was an Ice Smashing hit in arcades and consoles and became a staple of that era.
The pair of climbers' names are Popo and Nana, Popo wears a blue parka while Nana wears a red/pink parka. It’s unclear the exact relation between the two are…or even their age. They could be best friends, siblings, or even possibly a couple. Sakurai has said he believes their childhood bestfriends so that's the closest thing we’ll ever get to an answer on their age and relation. Whatever they truly are doesn’t really matter however, as these two Climbers are practically in sync with one another. And since their iconic game was released they have made a few cameos in other games, mainly the Super Smash. Bros series as a playable duo where they are most commonly known for nowadays.
Weapons and Equipment
Fireboy and Watergirl
Diamonds
In Each of the Fireboy and Watergirl games, they collect diamonds. Fireboy can collect red diamonds and watergirl collects blue diamonds. There are also green and white diamonds that they both con collect.
Fairies
In Fireboy and Watergirl 6: Fairy Tale, they are helped by fairies they control. Fairies can flip levers and even power things. Fairies come in a few different colours, and can power corresponding coloured power lamps, unless they’re white. White fairies can power any colour. Fairies also give off light, making them glow in the dark
Phones ☆
Fireboy and Watergirl both have phones they can use to communicate with each other. They text or send photos to each other
Various costumes ☆
Fireboy and Watergirl have been shown wearing various costumes during halloween. They also wore a gnome outfit while invading H & M one time.
Fireboy and Watergirl Plushes ☆
They have Fireboy and Watergirl Plush. We actually see a bunch of videos taken inside of the Coolmath games headquarters.
Lightsabers ☆
They were shown with lightsabers whenever they went to a con. Other shenanigans happened during their time there.
Matches ☆
Fireboy has been shown with matches and matchbox on a few occasions. He can light these with the matchbox or just with himself.
Slip n Slide ☆
Fireboy had gotten a slip n slide for Christmas. He can’t exactly use it, as he would need water, but oh well.
Forklift ☆
Fireboy actually is forklift certified. He had to use a manual that was fireproof, because he kept burning it, but now he has learned how to use a forklift.
Fire Scented Candle ☆
Watergirl got a fire scented candle for Christmas.
Possible Sword ☆
Watergirl was shown with a sword one time in a post. It was just her head over a character that had a sword, so this is dubious on whether it should be included to begin with.
Ice Climbers
Parka’s
The Ice Climber’s both wear colored parkas to keep themselves warm within the frigid climates. Popo’s is blue while Nana’s is pink, they also come equipped with comfy gloves and warm pants.
Ice Cleats
The Ice Climbers both wear Ice Spiked shoes to make traction easier on the icy floor, allowing them to move around in these conditions much easier. This is very apparent in Smash Bros. where they're the only character that doesn’t slip around on the ice.
Wooden Hammers
Both Ice Climbers have their signature wooden hammers, which is used to break large chunks of ice, swat away yetis, and knock around polar bears. In Smash Bros. especially we see how skilled they are with their hammer attacks.
Belay ☆
The Belay is traditionally used in ice climbing to suspend adventurous hikers, so it’s no wonder the pair come prepared with one in Smash Bros. but they use it a bit more creatively, using it to rubberband each other for increased vertical movement throughout the air.
Vegetables
Though not all actually being Vegetables, they are all called that in the game so like. The only thing of importance they add is giving the duo more points at the end of a level.
Condor
Though looking strangely like a Pterodactyl, the Condor is usually a helpful ally of sorts to the Ice Climbing pair. Usually found at the top of a mountain with a vegetable in hand, the Ice Climbers can grab onto the Condor who will fly them around to different areas.
Key ☆
In Subspace Emissary, characters can collect these sci-fi looking keys which can unlock any locked door found within the story mode.
Trophy Base ☆
Upon getting an enemies health low enough the Ice Climbers can use the Trophy Base which when making contact with a foe it turns them into a Smash Trophy. This renders them completely immobile and even works on incredibly powerful bosses within the story mode.
Stock Ball ☆
When finding a Stock Ball in Subspace Emissary, The Ice Climbers can collect it to give themselves an extra “Stock” which is essentially just an extra life allowing them to come back after death.
Emissary Collectables ☆
The Ice Climbers can collect Trophies, CD’s, and Stickers throughout Subspace Emissary that don’t really add anything combat wise.
Smash Bros. Brawl Items ☆
There's a random chance any item can spawn within Subspace Emissary upon killing an enemy giving the Ice Climbers access to…a lot of items. We decided to use these since they do technically have access to all of them but not World of Lights Spirits since that requires a certain circumstance to be met within the context of that game (Also I want to sleep tonight). I’ll list all the items from Brawl they can get their mittens on here (But heres a more in depth list with images of each item). There are some items that I don’t think can be used in Subspace no matter how much digging I did to see if they were there so not every item is included.
Beam Sword: Essentially a lightsaber, the length of the beam depends on how powerful the strike. Being able to grow three times it’s normal size
Fan: Does a weak amount of damage, but can attack incredibly fast allowing user to rack up chip damage quick.
Home Run Bat: A very powerful baseball bat that allows the Ice Climbers to send people flying
Lips Stick: Hitting a foe with this plants and a flower on their head. The more they hit, the bigger it grows. The flower does damage over time depending on how big it has grown.
Star Rod: A weapon that allows the user to shoot small star shaped projectiles at enemies up to twenty times.
Cracker Launcher: Shoots a ton of fire crackers when used, like a Rocket Launcher
Fire Flower: Works more like a flamethrower then a normal Fire Flower, shooting a small range of fire in front of them
Ray Gun: Can shoot up to sixteen green lasers
Super Scope: Can shoot a ton of small projectiles or can be charged up for a bigger more damaging projectile
Banana Peel: Can be thrown on the ground to slip up opponents
Blast Box: A big wooden box that can be thrown at enemies, if broken it causes a big explosion
Bob-ombs: Bombs with legs!
Bumper: Can be put at a location and will bump anyone it makes contact with far away
Crates: Can be broken to reveal more items
Deku Nut: When struck it will explode, stunning anyone caught in the blast
Freezie: A silly little guy that can be picked up and thrown at enemies to freeze them
Gooey Bomb: Can be latched onto an enemy and will explode after a short period of time
Green Shell: Can be thrown at enemies to damage them as it skids across the ground
Hot Head: Will travel across the ground slowly burning anyone in there way, can stick to walls and ceilings
Motion Sensor Bomb: Will explode if it detects motion near it
Mr. Saturn: The goat from Earthbound
Party Ball: Usually full of a ton of items ranging from food, bob-ombs, or sometimes just nothing
Pitfall: Throwing it at a location turns that area into a trap, a foe walking into that area will instantly be buried into the ground
Smoke Bomb: Smoke will attach to a player obscuring their vision and do minor damage
Food: There's a ton of different food items that can heal the Climbers
Franklin Badge: Can be worn to reflect any projectile for a period of time
Hammer and Golden Hammer: Powerful Hammers that swing up and down to do massive damage. The Golden Hammer is an instant K.O to whoever it hits.
Heart Container: Heals a LARGE chunk of health
Lighting: Using it shrinks everything in an area, can backfire and only shrink the user however
Maxim Tomato: Heals a LARGE chunk of health
Metal Box: Transmutes the Climbers into Metal Ice Climbers, turning their whole body to Metal taking decreased knockback and doing more damage at the cost of making them heavier.
Poison Mushroom: Shrinks user
Screw Attack: Causes user to perform a screw attack when jumping
Soccerball: Awesome
Starman: Makes user invincible for short periods of time
Super Mushroom: Increases user size
Spicy Curry: Causes user to shoot fire from mouth
Timer: Slows down time for everyone but the user
Warp Star: Carries user off screen and causes them to fall back down like a meteor doing large amount of damage.
Skills and Abilities
Fireboy and Watergirl
Fire Elemental Physiology
Fireboy is made completely out of fire. He gives off a small red aura from himself and when in the dark glows, as said before. He is able to walk in lava completely unharmed. He seems to be able to spread fire to other things, sense he’s fire, and even cries blue fire tears. Fireboy also slides on snow and ice, but is unable to jump. He seemingly doesn’t get tired, as they are able to
Now due to being made of fire, he is incredibly weak to water, as even just touching it can kill him. However, he has been shown at times making contact with Watergirl. He also is weak to two another thing called “Green Goo,” as kills him.
Water Elemental Physiology
Watergirl is made completely out of water. She gives off a small Blue aura and in the dark, she glows. She is shown being able to walk in water and when hit with lasers that can freeze water really quickly, she does freeze. Cool Math even talks about her not freezing in the Ice Temple. She’s also able to get hit by beams that melt the same water that was frozen without being affected by the lasers.
Even though she doesn’t seem to freeze, she still is slowed on ice, She also dies whenever she comes into contact with lava, even if she’s been seen coming into contact with Fireboy on occasion. She also is weak to two another thing called “Green Mud,” as it kills her.
Problem Solving Skills
Fireboy and Watergirl have been in many different temples, each with their own different puzzles and gimmicks, and they’ve completed every puzzle thrown their way by working together.
Light Manipulation
Fireboy and Watergirl have shown to glow. Even within light, they both give off a small red and blue glow, and when the lights are off, they give off a big spot of light around themselves. I mean it makes sense that Fireboy glows, but I have no idea why Watergirl does.
Fairy Manipulation
Fireboy and Watergirl can control fairies. Like mentioned in before, they can use them to pull levers, push small stone balls, or even power things.
4th Wall Breaching ☆
Fireboy and Watergirl were able to jump out of their own game and onto the Cool Math Games website. They were even shown to jump into other games and mess around. They have even been shown existing inside of the Cool Math Games headquarters, however these are plushies, so keep that in mind. They also went to New York Comic Con one time, shenanigans ensued.
Body Control ☆
They have been shown stretching their bodies. Fireboy can stretch his body to become super long, and Watergirl and stretch to become super wide. They also have been seen as cats before, along with a few various characters. Fireboy was also possibly shown being a werewolf. Honestly have no idea really what's going on in half the post. He’s also been shown being as big as buildings.
Fire Manipulation ☆
While never in any of the games, outside Fireboy has been shown being able to spread fire to surrounding things, like the manuals or buildings. He also cries blue fire tears. He also seems to be able to create things out of fire, like the word cool in the cool math logo. It’s unknown how much control he has of this fire, but he seemingly has at least some control.
Limited Clairvoyance
In the official mobile ports, there are two arrows that point to Fireboy and Watergirl at all times no matter where they are at in the level while playing as them. It even works in the dark.
Limited Immortality Type 4
In the official mobile ports, they are able to resurrect and come back to life by watching an ad… This lets them retry a level that they somehow ended up dying, The timer as well doesn’t restart and continues to run as normal. The only drawback, other than the ad, is that they can only do this once per level.
Limited Immortality Type 2 ☆
They were shown being fine with just one arm and one eye, at least Watergirl was. This may be because they are made of fire and water respectively, but it’s unclear exactly on what they need to survive and things they could survive.
Possible Flight ☆
They seem to be able to possibly fly. They kind of just fly around in a circle and then disappear, before entering the store, by walking. Fireboy himself has also been shown flying on a few occasions as well, mainly as super Saiyan and when he met someone who doesn’t know cool math games.
Possible Teleportation ☆
In the same video they seem to be able to teleport. Really don’t know what exactly is going on here, but yeah.
Possible Duplication ☆
Fireboy has been shown having many different copies of himself scattered around, all chilling in lava. Multiple Fireboy’s also appeared in this video…
Possible Creation ☆
Fireboy seems to be able to create things with his fire. He was able to create the word cool in the Cool Math logo.
Limited Gravity Manipulation ☆
Fireboy has been shown controlling gravity by making big rocks and himself float into the air, like Sigma from Overwatch.
Super Saiyan Transformation ☆
Fireboy become Super Saiyan one time after figuring out the F word (It’s frick) This not only gives him golden hair, but also allows him to fly and seemingly not have to worry about being in space. This may possibly make him stronger as well.
Fairies…
Light Manipulation
Fairies glow in the dark just like Fireboy and Watergirl. Fireboy and Watergirl can use this to help guide their path in the dark.
Empowerment
Fairies have been shown to power many things within Fireboy & Watergirl 6: Fairy Tale. Coloured fairies can only empower colour adjacent things, unless it’s white, as they can power things regardless of colour.
Ice Climbers
Climbing Experts
I mean, come on, it’s in the name. The Ice Climber's most refined skill is Ice Climbing. They’ve climbed countless mountains together and have the skills and experience to bare countless more.
Hammer Combat Skills
Being their main weapon, Popo and Nana are very skilled with their hammers. More shown through in Subspace Emissary where they keep up with Meta Knight while climbing the Ice Mountain fighting off all the enemies. They are especially skilled when using their might together.
Enhanced Athletics
The Ice Climbers are practically superhumanly athletic, in the original game they can jump two to three times their own height and seemingly higher in one of the WarioWare minigames. They can use just their own upper body strength to hold on to a flying Condor. Popo can twist the upper half of his body in WarioWare Twist. And can land perfectly on their feet falling from the top of an Icy Mountain in Subspace Emissary. Also being able to double jump and roll in every Smash game.
Possible Immortality Type 4
In the original games both Popo and Nana have access to multiple lives that allow them to resurrect after death. This isn’t the only time we’ve seen this however, in Subspace Emissary and World of Light the Ice Climbers have multiple stocks which allow them to come back, specifically in Subspace they take a little break as Meta Knight tags in until he dies to sub the Ice Climbers back in. (These effects can be replicated by their previously mentioned Stock ball)
Ice Manipulation ☆
In Super Smash Bros., Popo and Nana have been granted the ability to create and manipulate Ice which they use in many attacks. They can summon an icicle which they hit with their hammers at enemies, it slides across the ground and has a chance to freeze them. They can spin with an icy hammer attack called “The Hammer Squall” doing rapid damage, and can even form a small blizzard in front of them straight from their palms doing rapid damage and freezing opponents after prolonged exposure. And at the height of their Ice Manipulation, their Final Smash “Iceberg” causes them to form a Iceberg in the middle of the arena, doing large amounts of damage and freezing those who come into contact with it.
Resistances
Fireboy and Watergirl
Extreme Cold/Freezing Resistance
Fireboy and Watergirl are unable to be frozen. For Fireboy, this makes sense, as he’s fire. Watergirl on the other hand is also unable to be frozen. In the Ice Temple, they are immune to the blue lasers that can freeze water instantly in a few seconds. Cool Math even talks about how Watergirl doesn’t freeze. The Ice temple is also filled with ice and snow, presumably making it really cold inside the temple.
Extreme Heat Resistance
Fireboy and Watergirl are completely fine when being hit with Red Lasers that can melt the frozen water in a few seconds. This is more impressive for Watergirl as she is made of water. Watergirl also has been shown being fine in the Fire Temple, however she can still die in lava.
Greater Extreme Heat/Lava Resistance
Fireboy is not only able to be hit by the Red Lasers, but is also able to be in lava without being affected at all, this is in part due to him being made of fire.
Fairies
Extreme Heat/Lava Resistance
Fairies are shown surviving perfectly fine within lava. They still functioned after being dunked in lava.
Green Mud Resistance
They also have been shown surviving inside of Green Mud, the thing that kills Fireboy and Watergirl. They are only things that have shown to survive green goo, cool.
Ice Climbers
Extreme Temperature Resistance
(Art by JisuArt on DeviantArt)
The Ice Climbers are in their element in colder environments, specifically mountain peaks. They don’t seem affected in the slightest by rigid weathers like others would be.
Resistance to Changing Altitudes
Changes in altitude means changes in air pressure which can result in a ton of negative side effects, but the Ice Climbers are completely unaffected, a testament to their impressive athleticism.
Traction Resistance? ☆
I have no idea if this has a name or what to call it but Ice Climbers are completely unaffected by any change in traction thanks to their snowshoes. They're the only ones with this effect in Smash Bros. which is pretty cool.
Physical Feats
Fireboy and Watergirl
Strength
They can push other stone blocks that are heavier than the last
They could clash lightsabers with each other ☆
Fireboy can set fire to rooms (Here & here) and too whole buildings ☆
Fireboy could pick up rocks with their gravity manipulation ☆
Fireboy claimed he could beat Vegeta in a fight, Cool Math even agreed ☆
Fireboy ran on top a pizza, rolling it and hitting the Moto X3M Biker, killing them
Fireboy is possibly stronger when Super Saiyan ☆
Fairies can push the same stone with some difficulty
Durability
They can survive the both types stone blocks falling on top of them
They can survive fallings heights without any damage
Can withstand both Blue Lasers and Red Lasers with no affect on them
They have been shown hanging with many different Cool Math Characters like Runner, Papa Louie, and Duck ☆
Fireboy can stand in lava and fire and being perfectly fine
Fireboy is possibly durable when Super Saiyan ☆
Fairies have been shown surviving in lava and Green Mud without suffering any damage
Speed
They can complete temples in just a few minutes
They have been shown hanging with many different Cool Math Characters like Runner, Papa Louie, and Duck ☆
Forklifts usually have a top speed 10 MPh ☆
Fireboy was able to run atop of a pizza that kept up with the Moto X3M Biker.
Fireboy is possibly faster when Super Saiyan ☆
Fairies are faster than fireboy and watergirl
Ice Climbers
Strength
Can whack small yeti’s, big birds, and sunglasses wearing Polar Bears to ward them off
Break chunks of Ice and Rock with ease using their hammers (*Photo Above)
Popo and Nana can both support their own body weight plus their hammers when holding onto a Condor with one hand
Can defeat hordes of the subspace enemies with ease ☆
Can knock around Metal Primid, a Primid made completely of metal ☆
Can form entire Icebergs with Ice Manipulation ☆
Can scale far past the Polar Bear when including their appearance in melee and WarioWare Twist (Where their able to effortless beat the bear), who was able to bring down the entire Ice Climber Mountain casually which got calced to Large Building
Can keep up with characters stronger then themselves within Subspace Emissary ☆
Durability
Can easily survive falling from layer to layer in the Ice Climbers game
Can survive a lot of punishment from the Subspace Emissary enemies, including devastating explosions ☆
Can survive a lot of punishment from other Smash Characters constantly wailing on them in each game ☆
Scale to their own strength
Speed
Can quickly scale the mountains in Ice Climbers
Can outrace and react to birds like the Nitpicker, which most birds fly up to around 30mph
Can outrace Meta Knight to the top of a mountain in Subspace while fighting off hordes of enemies (Meta Knight mind you can fly!?!) ☆
Can dodge most attacks in smash, including laser weaponry. Possibly giving them incredible reaction speeds. ☆
Weaknesses
Fireboy and Watergirl
A major weakness of these two elements is they have a major weakness to water and lava respectively. If either come into contact with their weakness they will die.
If they are separated, then things can get tricky as they usually rely on each other to solve puzzles inside temples, the other is virtually useless inside these tunnels. While outside of these temples, things are a bit more lenient as they don’t need to rely on each other as much as inside the temples.
They also suffer from having no real combat experience, and really only solve puzzles. Even in outside media, they aren’t shown much combat experience. They have been shown angry and Fireboy has thrown a punch, but they barely come into confrontations.
Ice Climbers
This dynamic duo’s greatest weakness is being separated, how adorable! Although in Smash if you lose Nana Popo is lowkey kinda just fried (And reverse if Nana is the lead Climber). Most things from their smash moveset are only really effective when the duo is together. They can separate from one another to cover more ground but if one is killed the other loses a good chunk of their strongest abilities.
They can usually only use one Smash Item at a time, and have to place the other one away. This means opposing players could pick up their previously used items against them theoretically.
Final Thoughts
Well with everything out of the way, let's see which classic gaming duo’s, kept alive by people who truly cared about them. Will Popo and Nana be able to beat these two elements, or will Fireboy and Watergirl manage to hold their own against the two Ice Climbers. Who will win title of king!!!!!
Physical Stats
When it came to physical strength, Ice Climbers were very solidly ahead. Having a much higher strongest feat overall and being MUCH more consistent when it came to physical strength. Ice Climbers highest was calced to Large Building through scaling while Fireboy was debatably Small Building/Building level when he grows in size. While Watergirl didn’t really have anything at all to really compete.
The Ice Climbers take Physical Strength
Durability was a similar story, if not more so. Ice Climbers can scale to their own strength and can likely get far higher with their Glacier Peaks feat. While Fireboy and Watergirl didn’t have any solid feats to even start with.
The Ice Climbers have far superior Durability and Endurance compared to Fireboy and Watergirl.
Fireboy and Watergirl also lacked ANY solid speed feats as well, while even at their lowest Ice Climbers were multiple times faster than the elemental pair. Taking into account possible laser reacting and dodging and this was just as much as a stomp as the other categories.
The Ice Climbers take Speed as well.
Skills and Abilities
So when it came to skills, Fireboy and Watergirl likely had better general skills (Mainly Intelligence), seeing as when it came to problems solving, as that’s their whole game is centred around. Meanwhile, Ice climbers had better Combat skills when looking into everything for them. This is very important though, as when it comes to a fight, the Ice Climbers actually fight. Fireboy through a punch like, one time, and that’s it.
Fireboy and Watergirl had better IQ, but the Ice Climbers had actual fighting experience.
Fireboy and Watergirl had a lot more abilities with the Cool Math things included. They had all sorts of things, and a huge one being 4th Wall Breaching, but I’ll save that for later. Ice Climbers main things were being able to resurrect more than the opposing duo, which admittedly is really good, and their high powered Ice Manipulation. However freezing either Fireboy and Watergirl isn’t really an option, as they both are completely unaffected by the Blue laser and just general coldness. (Though it should be noted, Ice Climbers Ice Manipulation is MUCH higher than anything Fireboy and Watergirl have encountered before)
Fireboy and Watergirl had way more abilities at their disposal.
Though Fireboy and Watergirl had far more versatility it didn’t necessarily mean they had better abilities overall. Though they did have some very powerful ones such as the Fourth Wall Breaching. But besides that Popo and Nana’s Ice Manipulation and far better resurrection outclassed nearly everything Fireboy and Watergirl could throw at them.
Ice Climbers have the more constantly powerful abilities, however Fireboy and Watergirl’s Fourth Wall Breaching could possibly match them overall.
Weapons and Equipment
When it came to main media, the Ice Climbers actually had equipment and weapons that they used during the Ice Climbers game unlike Fireboy and Watergirl. This was even more apparent when looking at all things for them, as Smash Bros gave them so many items that they could get a hold of during Smash Bros. Brawl. They have access to tons of super powerful weapons, status changing items, healing items, time slowing items, and durability negation plus extra lives through the Subspace exclusive items. There were many things that could simply end the fight in an instant if Fireboy and Watergirl even got hit by them.
Ice Climbers have more and better weapons and equipment.
How good is 4th Wall Breaching?
So this is kind of a weird one. If Fireboy and Watergirl did jump out of the game/animation, then the Ice climbers had no ways of actually hurting or even interacting with them, they were virtually untouchable outside. However there is one main issue, Fireboy and Watergirl couldn’t do much either. The most they have done is leave the game and then mess with other games by entering them. So if they did want to do something, then they would have to go back inside, or possibly drop things back into reality. The most useful thing they could do is use it as a way to escape in front of the Ice Climbers and rest for a bit until they had to fight them again.
Another thing is the Ice Climbers could just defeat them before they even jump out to begin with. They held all the stat advantages and even had items that could end the fight in an instant.
4th Wall Breaching wouldn't really do that much in the grand scheme of things and Ice Climbers could kill them before they even jumped out.
Conclusion
Fireboy and Watergirl
Advantages:
+Better IQ
+Had a lot more abilities at their disposal
+Have resisted being frozen before, possibly countering The Ice Climbers freezing capabilities…
+Could possibly use any discarded Smash items used by the Ice Climbers…
+Could jump out of game/animation and be untouchable…
=Teamwork
=Silly Duos
Disadvantages:
-… But they’ve never withstood something of the Ice Climbers Ice Manipulation caliber before
-...Though they have a lot less experience with the items the Ice Climbers do, and this relies pretty heavily on luck
-… But they also couldn't do that much outside and Ice climbers could just kill them before they even jump out
-No real impressive strength feats to keep up
-Lacked any combat skills
-Had no real combat oriented equipment
-Many of the Ice Climbers items could just insta win against Fireboy and Watergirl
-Not as good resurrection capabilities
-Fireboy mainly carried, so if he died Watergirl would be lowkey dead, even more
-No counter to wobbling
Ice Climbers
Advantages:
+Took the Stat Trinity, and at their highest they completely stat stomped Fireboy and Watergirl
+Ice Manipulation could extend previous edge even further
+Had far more mobility with overall athletics and items
+MUCH more experienced
+MUCH better Combat IQ, seeing as their opponents have genuinely none
+Base arsenal completely outclassed Fireboy and Watergirl
+Extended arsenal with Subspace Emissary items could overwhelm and counter practically anything Fireboy and Watergirl could throw at them
+Could heal any damage done to them with healing items
+Had a far superior resurrection method and as long as they kept collecting Stock Balls they could continuously come back after death
+Could outspeed, slow down time, overwhelm, and possibly freeze Fireboy and Watergirl before they could even use their fourth wall breaching
+Is much less affected by losing one another then Fireboy and Watergirl are, still being pretty effective without their other half
+Both Ice Climbers could carry their own weight, unlike the elemental duo who completely rely on one person to carry most the duo’s weight
+Could Wobble them lol
+Could possibly freeze Fireboy and Watergirl with their Ice Manipulation…
=Teamwork
=Silly Duos
Disadvantages:
-...Though Fireboy and Watergirl have resisted being frozen before
-Fireboy and Watergirl could possibly use any discarded weapons the Ice Climbers drop
-Couldn’t do anything to Fireboy and Watergirl if they breached the Fourth Wall
Okay, let’s be real, Fireboy and Watergirl stood almost no chance, even if the Ice Climbers were just kept to their main media. Most of the impressive things for Fireboy and Watergirl came from random memes posted by Cool Math Games, and most of it was mainly from Fireboy. Ice Climbers had so many advantages and really the only thing that the Ice Climbers could have trouble with is Fireboy and Watergirl’s 4th Wall Breaching, but they couldn’t do that much if they were to jump out of the game/animation. Even then, given that we gave everything for both to balance out, Ice climbers gained so much things from Smash Bros, and many things could easily kill Fireboy and Watergirl and held nearly every advantage. Ultimately, Fireboy and Watergirl suffered from not really being able to do much against Popo and Nana.
The Winner is The Ice Climbers
Fireboy and Watergirl Votes: Vegeta, Fish Sr (Not a real people)
Popo and Nana Votes: Lucky, Eastbound, THE, Fish Jr, The Polar Bear in Shades, Meta Knight
Anyway, this was a vary interesting blog to do, especially with the way we did it. I mainly did the Fireboy and Watergirl research, and it was interesting to say the least. This is the first blog made and finished this year (Guardian vs Player started last year) So, Hooray, hope you enjoyed it!
Ice Climbers were locked in while Fireboy and Watergirl were geeked, Thanks for Reading
