Hasbro vs Mattel

"Sometimes... the only way to heal our wounds is to make peace with the demons who created them,"

-Dr. Ishiro Serizawa

Intro

Board games have existed for years, but 3D plastic board games didn’t come out till the 1960s, as they just figured out how to use plastic molds to mass produce products. While these two weren’t the first 3D board games, they are unique to the fact you control the pieces by pressing buttons and levels. These two have been around for decades and are still popular to this day.

Hungry Hungry Hippos, the marble munching game from Hasbro.

“We’re hungry!”

Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, the first boxing robots from Mattel.

“Knock his block off…”

So this one is a bit more confusing than usual due to the nature of both. So we’ll try and go over all the things we will be using, which will be complicated seeing as both have decades of media to cover. Them being toys and board games offers up some interesting media that could be used. There are also things for both that could be undocumented or even lost media, but we will try our best to get everything for both.

For Hungry Hungry Hippos, we’ll use anything official, easier said than done. Products created by its Publishers over the years. We’ll also look at the Elefun & Friends Franchise, as the Hippos are constant characters in the franchise. It’s also owned by Hasbro, so is usable in this MU.

For Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, we’ll also be using a similar guide, with all things considered official by the publishers of Rock ‘Em. It’s also worth noting that it’s gone by different names at times, those being Clash of the Cosmic Robots and Raving Bonkers

Also just to not write both titles each time we talk about them, we'll just generally refer to them as Hippos and Robots, since there’s multiple of them anyway. While they all have names, they all pretty much share abilities and are comparable. If there’s something of note about a certain one, then we’ll single out the name.

Also Also, the winner of this match up could change depending on what you buy for both and interpret. Again, these are toys and board games, some things are tricky to translate in a verse sense. This is our interpretation and your interpretation could change so many things for this match up.

This is actually such a goofy blog to work on. Some very interesting media that we looked at, stuff I honestly had no idea even existed.

IT'S ME, EASTBOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets hope i do more than the winner image! (also this mu was MY Idea)

Liturgusa krattorum

THIS MU WAS MY IDEA, I’M A GENIOUS!1!!11!! (it was not btw)

Disclaimer: This is mainly for fun, so things may be wrong, but you know it's about the journey not the destination. (also probably spelling mistakes but like) also Spoilers.

Background

The Classic Marble Chomping Game!!!

In the year 1967, a toy inventor, Fred Kroll, thought of a toy idea where hippos fight over food. In 1978, this idea became a reality. Milton Bradley published this game, and the rest was history. The Hungry Hungry Hippos is a classic when it comes to table top games. The Idea itself came from when Kroll worked for Pressman Toy Corporation, a Japanese toy company. This idea came to be and got the international rights to it.

The Hippos have had a few different names throughout the years. They were first known as Lizzie Hippo (purple), Henry Hippo (orange), Home Hippo (green), and Harry Hippo (orange), but most recently they’ve been called Sweetie Potamus (Blue), Bottomless Potamus (yellow), Veggie Potamus (green), and Hungry Hippos (orange). These Hippos have been competing since the 1960s, and will not stop until they have all the marbles. They even spent a few years with Elefun and their friends. But if you wanna win the game, you've gotta have a good aim in the classic marble chomping game.

KNOCK HIS BLOCK OFF!!!

In 1948, there was a popular arcade game called “Silver Gloves”. Marvin Glass and Associates loved the idea and wanted to make a toy. But tragedy struck in the boxing world. Davey Moore had died in the ring, everyone feeling this loss. Glass was originally going to put away the idea and never touch it again, but Burt Meyer didn’t want it to go to waste. So he changed the boxers to robots. So in 1964, the world was introduced to Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.

There’s two main robots throughout the series; The Blue Bomber and the Red Rusher. These two have been a mainstay in the series. BB came from Umgluck, and RR came from Soltarus II. The two would be the fight of the universe! But that was just the start, over the course of the years we’ve seen many others like PROG-2, V-STYX, Silver, Yellow Yahoo, Brown Bully, The Orange Oppresser, Silver Stretcher, Purple Pyro, Green Grappler, Pink Pummeler, Black Bruiser, but these are just the base models. Eventually the robots became more advanced, being able to switch parts and create whole new robots. This marked a new area for the Robots, the old ones going into retirement and letting the next general Knock their block off.

Weapons and Equipment

Hippos

Marbles

The Marbles are probably what Hungry Hungry Hippos is best known for, other than the Hippos of course. These are what the Hippos eat. Whichever Hippo collects the most Marbles wins. In more recent games, there’s also a Golden Marble, worth two points. You have the option to play for Golden Marbles, whoever collects them wins. But for the most P

Melons

In Hungry Hungry Hippos Launchers, rather than the Marbles, you get Melons. This pretty much is the same thing, just a different coat of pain.

Veggie Pucks

In Hungry Hungry Hippos Juniors, you get four different Veggies. While Cucumbers and Tomatoes aren’t really Veggies, these are slide like pucks. You slide them into a the Hippos mouths and get points for it.

Coconuts

In the Disney version of Hungry Hippos, they eat coconuts instead of Marbles or Melons.

Launchers

In Hungry Hungry Hippos Launchers, each Hippo gets a Launcher. This is what you use to fling Melons at the Hippos to eat. The Launches also have a crate attached to them to hold the Melons.

Chute and Ladders

These are pretty simple, Hungry Hippo is shown using both Chutes and Ladders. Like the actual game, Chute takes you down the board, and the Ladders take you up the board.

Balloon

Balloon

Power Ups

In Hungry Hungry Hippos: Move and Munch, the Hippos can get different Power Ups to help or hinder others. These are presented as flying strawberries with question marks on them. Once they eat them, it will activate. I couldn’t find an official name nor if I have all of them, so bare in mind.

  • Exploding Pinecone

  • Flying Strawberry

    • Gives a huge amount of points when eaten

  • Lightning Strike

    • Will send a lightning strike to all other Players. This also shrinks whoever is hit.

  • Rainbow

  • Grow larger

    • Pretty simple, lets you grow larger.

  • Munch Faster

    • This lets you munch faster, getting more fruit.

Pen

The Hippos have had a pen attached to them that lets you draw on a screen of sorts inside of their mouth.

Robots

Boxing Gloves

In the Score Card, they are presented as having Boxing Gloves. However, the actual models are a bit inconclusive whether or not they actually have Boxing Gloves.

Possible Machine Oil

In the original instructions, if your robot is ever getting sluggish you can always put light amounts of machine oil on their bearings and gears.

Match Coin

The Match coin is one of the main parts of the Dice game. This determines how you roll the dice. One side makes it so you have to roll all the same colour, the other lets you roll the same symbol. Once you match all your Fight Dice, you grab the Match Coin. The one who fails to grab the Match Coin must flip a Fight Card.

Fight Dice

Each Robot/Player is given four Fight Dice. You use these to fight. The way you fight is determined on what side the Match Coin lands on. Once you roll all of the same dice and get the Match Coin, your opponent must flip a fight card. You may all roll all four Dice on the Target Symbol to flip over a Fight Card

Fight Cards

These determine if you are hit or not in the game. Each player is given 5 of these, with three Hit Cards and two Miss Cards. Whenever you fail to get the Match Coin you have to flip one over. If you flip a Hit, you take a hit. If you flip a Miss, you dodge the attack. You can also flip a card over if all four of your dice land on the Target symbol.

K. O. Dice

This is a set of dice that have K and O on them. Each player is given one die and must roll them. If both are rolled on the same colour, the robot of the same colour can attack. The other has the change to block

Fight Cards

This actually brings backs some of the forgotten Robots, these Fight Cards are to be collected by Players. There’s also the Multaplicative Fight Cards that make you place down more cards.

Robo Wrench

The Robo wrench comes from the 2000s toy line of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, being created to go along with the game around that time. This device lets the robots take off limbs and replace them with other parts.

Robot Attachments

In the toy line there were many new Robots, each coming with their own attachments that others could use to customize themselves. This gives them access to all of their different tools over the course of the toy line. They also do this during the 2000 game, which the toys are based off. Some of these I am definitely leaving out due to not finding them.

  • Blue Bomber and Red Rocker

    • Uppercut Arm

    • Slugger Shield

    • Telescope Head

    • Secret Kick Boxing Blades

  • Fangster

    • Snake Missiles

    • Battle Armor

    • Serpent Shield

    • Attack Wheel

  • Headcase

    • Drill Attack

    • Slashing Blade

    • Capture Arm

  • Disasteroid

    • Satellite Missile

    • Lunar Battle Module

    • Combat Claw

    • Plug in Solar Wings

  • Dino Venger

    • Rocket Tail Launcher

    • Raptor Leg

    • Raptor Shield

  • Blasto the Clown

    • Boxing Glove Arm

    • Seltzer Gun

In the game the main two have their own unique powers. Blue Bomber can shoot his gloves and drag people back to him. Red Rocker is capable of shooting spikes from their chest.

Motorcycle

In the toy line, one of the characters has a motorcycle that others can use as well.

Trophy

In the 2006 game, whenever you complete the Title Fights, you are rewarded with a big Trophy.

Drones

Whenever a Robot stands inside of the light of the drone, they gain some health back.

Hoodie

This random thing has a hoodie.

Skills and Abilities

Hippos

Hippopotamus Physiology

For the most part, the four Hippos are comparable to actual hippopotamus. Hippos grow around 15 feet, with a swinging speed of 8 MPH. More impressively is their run speed, with them being able to run at 19 MPH. Along with an impressive running speed, they have a nasty bite, biting at 1,821 pounds per square inch.

While they are hippos, they are things that set them apart from their real life counterparts. They have an uncanny ability to stretch out their necks, which isn’t just a gameplay thing. They’ve also shown to vary in size, but stick around to the size of a human. They are also capable of speech.

Limb Extension

As said before, the Hippos are capable of stretching out their necks. This is actually supported by games that have the Hippos in, showing them stretching out.

Transformation

The Hippos have been shown being different animals at times. The two being a Triceratops and a Unicorn. These pretty much work similar to the actual hippos, just a different animal now. In commercials they’ve been shown transforming as well, from kids back to hippos. Interestingly, they also turn their game board into a pile of food. They are also a tennis ball that one time.

Water Manipulation

In Splash, the Hippos create a sprinkler, letting them spray water into the air. This is there to prevent people from getting close, making the game harder.

Text Manipulations

The Hippos have constantly shown themselves able to eat text and words. They do this by just eating, and it's something that is constant throughout the entire life of the Toys. Most of the time these words are actually not their in their world based on how other things entirely act with it. The Hippos are just able to eat it anyway.

Light Manipulation

The Hungry Hippo is capable of glowing in the dark along with all their other friends. That's kind of cool.

Idk what this is

The Hippos are able to draw things inside of their mouth. And once their done, they can simply close their mouth to clear the drawing.

Robots

Boxing skills

The Robots are known for their boxing and fighting. They can Feint, Lead, Counterpunch, Jab with their left , and the Knockout Punch with their right. In other mediums with the pair of Robots, they are also said to punch or TKO Punch. They’ve also demonstrated dodging and blocking on multiple occasions. In Clash of the Cosmic Robots their punch is called the “Jupiter Jab” and “Plasma Punch”.

In the games, they’ve shown more combat skills, from more complex attacks, like jumping in the air to attack to even a multiple hit attack into an upper cut. They can also charge up and attack for a stronger punch. They’ve also shown even more skills in line with general fighting in Arena, throwing all sorts of kicks and punches.

Some of the robots have certain skills unique to them. Red Rocker does a spin attack. Blue Bomber does a headbud. Yellow Yahoo does a dive attack. Brown Bully also does a spin attack. The Orange Oppresser does a jumping spin attack. Silver Stretcher does a leap attack in the air. Purple Pyro does a leg spin attack. Green Grappler does a flip kick. Pink Pummeler charges forward, throwing punches. Black Bruiser does a slam attack.

Inorganic Physiology

They are robots, made of metal. This offers some other fun things like being able to still function after losing their head, even being able to reattach their heads. While the main two Robots haven’t been in space, PROG-2 and V-STYX have been during Clash of the Cosmic Robots. Furthermore, they would later make versions with the original Robots with the parts of the Cosmic Robots. They’ve also been demonstrated to be larger than normal humans, at least most of the time. Additionally the Score Card shows them of having an original not of Earth. The Robots have been shown able to speak on a few different occasions.

Digital Form

This one's pretty strange, in Rock Em Sock Em AR, the robots exist only as a digital form on this mini arena that can only be interacted with through a digital format. Noted they can’t really interact with anything in the physical world with this form.

Shockwave Manipulation

All the Robots in Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots Arena are capable of hitting the ground in some manner, sending a shock wave in front of them.

Regeneration

In the Dice Game, you are able to flip back over a Hit Card. This in turn lets you be able to take another hit, possibly giving you enough time to win. This is done if the Player rolls four Target’s on their dice.

Immortality Type 2

The Robots can survive getting their head knocked off, this is something constant with the toys. They’re still able to punch and stuff. They’re also able to reattach their heads. They’ve also shown being able to survive getting their limbs torn off and even replaced on their own.

Whatever this is

They had a head of an 8-ball that one time, it pretty much has your typical 8-ball answers. This doesn’t really mean anything, so yeah.

Possible Size Manipulation

The Robots have had some inconsistent sizes over the years. In the original, they’re actually demonstrated as being larger than normal people, as seen compared to the crowd. Also noted that there's an arcade version of the robots that are much taller and wider then your average human. However, over the years, they’ve definitely changed in size. Today's version of the game is actually smaller than the original. Additionally we have the worlds Smallest Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em.

Resistances

Hippos

No Real Resistances

Robots

Heat Resistance

Can survive being hit with lasers, though they do sustain minor damage the beam isn’t able to fully cut through the Rock Em Sock Em Robots. They also take multiple different forms of heat in the Arena game.

Radiation Resistance

Nuclear Wastor has a few weapons that are capable of producing some kind of radiation. Some other characters also have certain attacks similar to radiation as well. While they do get hurt, it doesn’t pose any other side effects.

Physical Feats

Hippos

Strength

Durability

  • Likely comparable to an actually Hippo

  • Likely comparable to a Triceratops

    • Triceratops have been found with t rex marks on their frills, it's hard to say that the Hippos are one to one with them, but here let's say they are, most paleontologist say the bite force of a T-Rex could be around 35,000 to 57,000 Newtons. And can generally tank and beat T rex at times as well.

  • Can with stand a dog thrashing it around.

  • Survived an exploding fruit.

  • Survived another Hippo falling onto them.

Speed

Robots

Strength

  • Can Knock off each others heads in one punch

  • Can charge a punch to make it stronger.

  • In the movie, Red One, the World's Smallest line of Rock Em Sock Em Robots are given life and grown up to scale. Then they punch a guy through a stone pillar and two more into a metal gate bending the gate.

  • Have equipment like missiles and explosions.

  • They can create shockwaves just by hitting the ground.

  • Can send other robots flying in the air with ease

    • Estimating what we can get for the robots in Rock Em Sock Em arena, the average weight for these robots assuming they're made out of completely steel could be anywhere around 11,000lbs. Also they are able to knock them up to twelve feet or more into the air.

Durability

Speed

Weaknesses

Hippos

The Hippos are hungry, that’s their whole thing. Most of the time they’re trying to eat, even trying to eat things they really shouldn’t. This would give them some kind of disadvantage in a fight, as they crave food.

Hippos also have no real combat skills. Yes, they “Fight” for food, but really that's more so just reaching the food, they don’t even interact with each other in the grand scheme of it. The only time we do see them actively sabotage each other, is in Move ‘N Much, where they’re got access to power ups, with only some of them negatively affecting others.

Robots

An issue with the robots is that they’re capable of over working themselves, needing a moment to cool down from the heat. This is more showcased in the games, as they have a heating system that can over heat.

Things of note

Size Difference?

(Image from Fish [Image nothing to do with anything])

Something that probably should be addressed is that the Robots have been shown being way bigger than Humans, as well as Hippos. So, what does this mean? Well, not too much really, but it could lead to some weird interactions. So for simplicity's sake, they’ll be a relative size compared to each other. While on four legs, the Hippos will be smaller than the Robots. When they’re standing, they’ll be a similar size. This is just so things are more fair.

Final Thoughts

(Art from Lucky)

(Art from Fish Jr.)

Now that we’ve discussed these two iconic Boardgames, let's see what happens when we compare the two directly to see which will come out on top. Will the Hippos rock these robots, or will the robots no longer hunger for victory. Let’s see which wins the title of king.

Strength and Durability

Out of the two, who is stronger? While real world Hippos and Triceratops are powerful and nothing to scoff at, the robots are able to send each other flying. Keep in mind, these things are massive compared to humans. Something more notable is the robots having missiles and other explosive equipment. It’s generally hard to compare these two feats out right, especially since they're pretty different. These missiles more times than not are more powerful then the Hippos. Satellite Missile and Nuclear Wastor Missiles are their best bets in terms of strengths. Not to mention that on their own, the robots weigh way more than the Hippos, and they're able to send each other flying through the air with just punches. However, whenever the Hippos are Triceratops they do weigh more and are stronger, but even then without it the Robots are stronger.

Defences also falls into a simulator category. The two should scale to their own strength. This pretty much leads to the same situations as their strength. So the Robots should take this as well. The Robots also scale to themselves more constantly, as they actually fight each other rather than the hippos.

The Robots take both states as their equipment is stronger than what the Hippos are physically capable of.

Speed

Speed is pretty interesting with the feets they’ve shown. The Hippos don’t have much other than being comparable to other real Hippos and Triceratops, which lands them to 19-20 MPH. The Hippos could also scale to Elefun, who ran from Japan to their home in a few seconds. While it’s never said how far they are, the journey did take multiple days when they walked, and they just ran back in 5 seconds, making them incredibly fast. On the other hand, the Robots don’t have much for travel speed, they have good stuff for reaction speed. They’ve constantly dodged things like sound waves, electricity and even lasers (which actually happens quite often). So they make up for their lack of travel speed feats.

Speed is a tie as the hippos have faster travel speed, while the Robots have a faster reaction time.

Utility and Abilities

This is where we leave the rest of their stuff. We first have to go over their useful equipment, because not everything they have is even useful. The Veggie Pucks and Launchers are useful as a long ranged option, really their best things are their Power Ups. The Exploding Pinecone and Lighting are incredible, but not enough. The Robots have tons of different attachments from the toy line and games, far exceeding anything the Hippos have. They have plenty of close and far ranged options, nothing the hippos have ever seen.

Now their abilities, it's also pretty clear. The Robots trump almost everything the Hippos have. The best options for the Hippos are their transformations and maybe Limb Extension. The real issue is that the Hippos don’t fight. Yes, they compete for food, but they don’t fight. The Robots' whole thing is fighting, not to mention that they can survive with pieces missing and even regenerate. If the hippos did get a good hit, the Robots could just switch out the piece or heal. Heck, they don’t even need to regenerate, as they can just keep fighting till the Hippos give out.

Robots take both Utility and Abilities as everything they have trumps what the Hippos have.

Conclusion

Hungry Hungry Hippos

Advantages:

  • +Far faster travel speed

  • +Could be stronger if a Triceratops

  • +Power Ups could be usefully

  • +Possibly better team work skills

Disadvantages:

  • -Slower reaction speed

  • -Nearly not as much useful Equipment and Abilities

  • -No way around Immortality and Regeneration

  • -No real fighting skills

Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots

Advantages:

  • +Stronger and more durable

  • +Faster reaction speed

  • +Better Equipment

  • +Better skills and abilities

  • +Had Immortality and Regeneration

  • +Better ranged options

  • +Better upclose options

  • +Actually fighting skills

Disadvantages:

  • -Slower travel speed

  • -Harder time teaming up

Overall, the Robots simply had better equipment, skills and abilities then what the Hippos have. They’re also physically better than the Hippos as well. The only real advantage the Hippos had was being faster travel speed, which was through scaling. The Robots more than made up for this with their reaction speed, being able to dodge lasers. These Hippos got their block knocked.

The Winner is Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots
